I don’t mind them on the trail so long as they are respectful. I really dislike them generally on account of the fact that most aren’t and they are very loud and like to rip past campsites at 1 am to try out their artificial suns lightbars.

Truthfully though, taken at face value alone, they are pretty neat machines. Its the users that have ruined them for me.

I honestly want a Honda Pioneer 1000-5. The benefits you listed, but it can carry five people, three in the front and two in back. The back two can be folded into a bed for added capacity. Throw in an actual 6 speed (motorcycle) transmission, paddle shifters, dual lockers, etc. and you have a nice trail vehicle for taking the family out.

Admittedly, if we had near the amount of off road trails I you guys do, I would just stick with my truck, but there are significantly more ATV trails by me.

Last run-in we had with a set of RZR’s was in the mountains just before all the snow was melted. We’d pulled to the side of the trail and were just discussing how it would be better to not push through the remaining 3-foot drifts and not shred the trail to bits. No sooner had I said this than a group of RZR’s roared past, spinning tires, sliding left and right across the trail, shredding everything in sight and slinging a slurry of snowy muddy slush all over myself and the trucks we’d parked.

It is funny how most Americans laugh at small cars, but the same guys that talk shit about “tiny four cylinder cars” looooove these things.

I can’t articulate exactly why, but I feel like this simultaneously overestimates and underestimates the original Willys. Maybe it’s just because I like Willys Jeeps and hate these no matter how capable they are and you’re right after all.

If your peaceful camping/hunting/fishing trip is ruined by a bunch of fucking yahoos revving deafening engines at random intervals and shooting their guns at anything that moves, or doesn’t, you can bet one of these is involved.

well the power to weight is pretty good and they are geared to go no faster than 65 so they move along really nicely.

I mean, 100 for 1900 lbs? not bad.

One thing I am perfectly clear on...UTV USERS are, generally speaking, terrible.

They saved my butt last fall in Moab when I bonked hard on a mountain bike trip but getting a few hours ride back to safety with them was a stark illuminiation of the stereotype:

On a trail they’d never done

Without a map

in the evening

way above their skill level

drunk

I learned the other week that you can fit as many as eight people in them if you really try!

You know that skinny dirt road north of Salt Lake that winds up and into the Wasatch National Forest? Yeah, whole bunch of people stuffed into one screaming around a bend on that tiny road. No helmets. One of them almost got a nice little Warn facial tattoo.

Yeah, That kept popping into my head. That was years ago and they’ve certainly gotten better since then. That this has more payload than some Ram 1500's is nuts.

At $18k entry pricepoint for the model in the above photo, (some nicer 4-seat models hitting upwards of $27k) I’d rather spring for a CJ-2A or an FJ40 any day.

The UTVs don’t hold up so well when they are loaded. Too much bike engineering in a heavy vehicle.

I’d say the Suzuki Jimny is closer, although less ‘murica.

They are normally terrible for a couple of reasons. Mostly because they are the type that want to buy something that can go off-road but don’t realize it can only go places most Jeeps can go and cost more than an old Jeep that can do more.

Jet skis are awesome if you’re the one riding it. Awful if somebody else is riding one in your vicinity.

I really want one of these, but cannot justify the price. There’s nowhere around here to use one, and I know I won’t be able to haul it somewhere to use it nearly often enough to make it worth it.

My rallycross group allows these to run, and it looks like an insane amount of fun.

Don’t be sad. Japanese Kei class vehicles are sometimes seen as basically a UTV by the DMV. So if UTV’s are street legal so is that Suzuki Cappuccino you know you want.
